We analyze the pros of studying Houdini in a Masterclass with SideFX

Julie Lottering, Education and Training Manager at SideFX, explains to students and graduates of Animum, the value of Houdini and the procedural method in the VFX Industry.

Why study Houdini? What profiles does the VFX industry demand? What is most valued by the studies of a special effects professional? These are some of the topics that we discussed in the online Masterclass of Animum with Julie Lottering, Education and Training Manager in SideFX.

In its more than 20 years, Houdini has become the industry standard for creating natural phenomena, images of destruction and other digital effects. The contribution of the software to the VFX industry has been such that in the last edition of the 2018 Technical Oscars, SideFX was recognized for its creation with one of the Academy’s awards.

Masterclass SideFX

With the help of Julie Lottering, alumni and graduates of Animum, they learned how the VFX industry is changing and how it will affect the work of visual effects artists in the coming years.

Study Houdini and the procedural methodology

SideFX reveals the future of Houdini

Robert Magee, Senior Manager of Product Marketing at SideFX, revealed in Siggraph 2016 a first preview of the innovations that will be incorporated into Houdini in the coming months.

SideFX announced its latest update in May.

Although companies like Autodesk and Maxon took advantage of Siggraph 2016 to present the new versions of Maya 2017 and Cinema 4D R18 in society; SideFX dedicated it to show an advance of the immediate future of Houdini (at this point, it is worth remembering that the last update of Houdini 15.5 dates from last May, and whose main novelties focused on the sections of modeling, crowds, VR and El initial support of the external rendering engines in the Houdini Indie edition, starting initially with RenderMan, Arnold and OctaneRender.

SideFX also wants to attract generalist users.

The perception that many users have of Houdini is that it is specialized in FX that require procedural procedures, such as particle simulation or dynamics. Then, in most cases, its use is proposed in combination with other generalist software such as Maya, 3ds Max or Cinema 4D. When in reality, Houdini is a complete solution for modeling, shading, lighting, animation and rendering (with basic post-production options).

Houdini 16. A turning point?

Although in 2015 and 2016, with the launch of Houdini 14, Houdini 15 and Houdini 15.5, many new features have been introduced in the sections of VFX, crowds, modeling, rendering and rigging; With Houdini 16 everything will go a step further.

VFX

The fluid simulation will have new formulas and control parameters:

  • New methodologies to simulate foam and splashes.

Modeling

Users of Houdini 16 will find a similar concept to the Marking Menus of Autodesk Maya, which they will know as Radial Menus. Context menus that will accelerate (to a large extent) the modeling tasks, giving direct and instantaneous access to the most common modeling operations of creation, selection and editing.

An important (and productive) novelty that will be accompanied by new options for smoothing surfaces, UV and attributes; a new Poly Tools and a new faster and more accurate Boolean system.

The procedural creation of land will also have its space in Houdini 16, ideal for video games and even for projects of info-architecture or VR simulation. All without leaving Houdini and integrated with the other modules.

Lighting & Render

SideFX will not forget Mantra, the native rendering engine of Houdini, with an increase in startup speed of up to 10x, adaptive sampling and a new pixel filtering in Mantra and in the IPR viewer, or the inspection of material style sheets per-pixel for greater accuracy.

Character Animation & Rigging

Quite possibly, the least developed Houdini module, especially when compared to the benefits of Autodesk Maya. But with Houdini 16 the creation and configuration of the rigging will be accelerated (also with the already mentioned Radial Menus), a complete system of simulation of muscles for characters and animals.

An interface adapted to the new times, more accessible, productive and yes, prettier

It is clear that each project is different and that the tools to be used will depend on their needs. But what we can be sure of, is that in all of them, we will have to deal with the user interface. For this same reason, SideFX will offer a complete renewal of the interface, from scratch. How will this affect your daily work? Throughout!

In general

  • A profound increase in performance.
  • A modernized aesthetic, more pleasing to the eye (because you have to admit that the current one is a bit Spartan).
  • Much, much more customizable (including the shapes of the nodes).
  • Greater speed and precision in the labeling and connection of nodes.

Shading

  • When working the shading, each node will include a thumbnail view of the result, so it will be easier to visually identify the node that we want to edit.
  • The shader modules will be redesigned and updated.
  • Improvements will be added in the Viewport with OpenGL.
  • An enriched shading library, with more options.

 

 

Instructions: how to crack in Windows

1- Open [houdini-16.0.504.20-win64-vc14.exe] and install the software.
BEFORE STARTING HOUDINI:

2- Stop HoudiniLicenseServer (from services)
3- Copy sesinted.exe from Crack dir to c:\windows\system32 (overwrite)
4- Start HoudiniLicenseServer (from services)

5- Licensing:
Launch the License Administrator.
In the Server Information tab you will find your Server Name & Server Code

Launch Houdini Keygen
Enter your Server Name & Server Code
and generate your license keys …

Go back to the License Administrator
Select File/Manually Enter Keys…
Copy paste the keys you generated, 5 by 5 .
Key string #1 should be SERVER your_server_name server_code …..

NB : Install the “other keys to play with” at your own risk, those are mainly for dev and debug … so Make sure you installed the License keys first.

6- That’s all. Enjoy the final full version.

 

 

Instructions: how to crack in MacOS

1. Unzip and unrar to a temp directory
2. Start installation

3.Before Starting Houdini, you must first set up the shell environment.
At a C shell prompt (csh, tcsh, bash), type the following:

source houdini_setup
(you run this within the installed dir)
This command initializes the current shell’s environment to run
Houdini. You may want to add the above line to your .login file.

4.Licensing:
Stop license server (from the license server menu or sesictrl -q)
Copy the sesinetd (from Crack dir) matching your version to
/Applications/Houdini/Houdini[version]/Frameworks/Houdini.framework/Versions/[version]/Resources/houdini/sbin
and
/Library/Preferences/sesi/
Make sure you dont change file access permissions (in other words make sure the binary is executable chmod 755 sesinetd in case)
Restart license server
Tip : check md5 of the running sesinetd to make sure you replaced it
another way to really kill / restart the server , just copy paste this command as root or sudo
ps aux | grep sesi | fgrep -v grep | awk ‘ { print $2 }’| xargs -n 1 kill -9

Launch the License Administrator by typing “hkey” or from the laucnh menu.
In the Server Information you will find your Server Name & Server Code

Launch the Windows Houdini Keygen or the Linux keygen or our OSX keygen
(OSX keygen will generate your keys on your desktop , click generate button (bottom right keygen)
Enter your Server Name & Server Code
(those can also be obtained this way : sesictrl -n)
and generate your license keys …

Go back to the License Administrator
Select File/Manually Enter Keys…
Copy paste the keys you generated 5 by 5 .
Key string #1 should be SERVER your_server_name server_code …..
You can also enter your keys this way : sesictrl -I key

5. To start Houdini Master, type “houdini”.
