Top tips for beginners in After Effects

When you start using After Effects for the first time, it feels like you are learning a completely new language. Each button and all the designs are so different from any other editing program you have previously used, and it can be discouraging to discover how everything works. Fortunately, that’s why we’re here, to help and offer you a series of best tips for beginners in After Effects. So without further delay, here we go, do not forget to write down all the doubts that may arise during the article and then contact us to solve all those questions!

1. Effect of movement

When you add movement to your animation, is it blocked and unrealistic? That could be because you do not have motion blur activated. Motion blur adds a faint tail image to the animation that softens movement and mimics how cameras capture movement in the real world.

To activate motion blur for your layer, click on the three circles button at the top of the timeline. This will enable a box where you can click on their layers with the same logo. Click on that box to activate motion blur for that layer. If you want to customize the amount of motion blur in the project, go to Composition> Composition settings. From there, click on the Advanced tab and you can adjust the angle of the shutter up or down to get more or less blur by movement.

2. Keyframes

Keyframes are the building blocks of After Effects. They are the language you use to tell the program when and where to do what. When you put two keyframes in any element of the composition, After Effects will automatically connect those two positions creating the information between them.

There are simple ways to manipulate keyframes. For example, if you want to move the keyframes in the timeline without having to move each one individually, you can highlight them all with the cursor and drag them through the composition. To compress or expand your keyframes, you can hold the Alt key with the selected keyframes and manipulate the timing of the sequence keeping the relative timing equal.

3. Relieve keyframes

When you set your first keyframes on a timeline, they may look super-blocked and unnatural. This is because After Effects is completing the information in the strictest possible way: from point A to point B. To make it look more natural, you have to slow down the movement at the beginning and end.

This is where the echo of relieving keyframes comes into play. To do this, right-click on the keyframe and select Keyframe Wizard> Easy Ease. This will reduce the last frames so that it slides smoothly to its final position.

To adjust how relieved your keyframes look, you can adjust those settings in the graphics editor. To select it, click on the graphic button next to the Motion Blur button on the timeline. This will show a graphic on your layer. To edit the speed, click on the drop-down menu at the bottom and select “Edit Speed Graph“. Here, you can grab the yellow handle on the side of the keyframe to increase or slow down your “easyness”. This will make your animation super smooth.

4. Masks and tracking mattes

At this point, you may already know what solid layers are. They are the visible and tangible layers that are used to build the animation. Now think of the masks as the exact opposite: they hide layers behind an invisible “mask”. You can create masks within your layers to hide certain properties of your layer. For example, if you need to cut a circle from a square layer, a mask would be a good choice.

However, the tracking mattes are a bit different. It is the process of taking a form and turning it into a mask for another layer. You can do this for a multitude of reasons, but one of the simplest is for a logo. To do this, create a layer with shape and the size of your logo. Go to the layer settings and click on the Track Matte drop-down menu for the logo layer. Then click on Alpha mate – Form layer 1. This will convert the alpha channel for that layer into the alpha channel of your logo layer. From here, you can frame the location of your logo to go from behind the shape layer to the visible plane.

5. Null objects

Null objects, in a nutshell, are empty objects that you can use to control other objects. Think of it as a grouping mechanism – you can use it to control many layers just by adjusting one. When a technique of this style is performed, it is usually called “create a parent layer“. After Effects, you can “breed” one layer for another and, regardless of what the father does, so does the “son”. To do this, simply select the icon of a doodle circle called “pickwhip” in the layer you want to convert to the daughter and drag it to the layer you want to convert into the parent. Now you can adjust the settings of the null object to change things such as size, location or orientation without damaging the keyframes you have already set in the parent layer.

  1. How to disable automatic updates? Can’t find it any where.

Blocked incoming connections using firewall, clicked “Check for updates”, said “Your software is up to date”, so it must be calling home.

Closed and re-opened the app and it didn’t blow up the serial #, but need help!

Surely I don’t need to install and then disable Adobe Updater??

    Thx!
